A man from New York City who tragically shot his ex-girlfriend just hours before her wedding ceremony has been unsuccessful in his appeal to reduce his life sentence.
Agustin Garcia, aged 61, drove from his neighborhood in Washington Heights on September 26, 1999, and opened fire on Gladys Ricart while she was in her Ridgefield living room, preparing to hand out bouquets to her bridesmaids.
Garcia and Ricart had been in a long-term relationship, and after their breakup, he had been stalking her for several weeks leading up to the tragic event, as reported in media accounts of his trial.
Garcia's attorneys, hailing from the Dominican Republic, had attempted to secure a conviction for manslaughter by arguing that the shock of discovering that Ricart was marrying another man had caused a temporary mental illness.
