Gladys Ricart

On September 26, 1999, in Ridgefield, New Jersey, Gladys Ricart was joyfully preparing for her afternoon wedding. The beautiful bride and her nieces were in the family living room, smiling for the video camera in expectation of the ceremony that was soon to follow. The photographer recorded the heart-touching moment as she handed bouquets to each bridesmaid (her nieces) and kissed them affectionately. With the camera still running, Ms. Ricart's ex-boyfriend, Agustin Garcia, suddenly burst in and shot her dead. Garcia had been a prominent activist, and the local Latino community was outraged at this senseless and depraved act. The crime was captured on video, and combined with the testimony of witnesses, many of whom had been chosen as her wedding party, Garcia was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. To commemorate Gladys Ricart, a recent demonstration against domestic violence was held in Washington, and many women donned wedding gowns in her memory, including Academy Award nominee Salma Hayek.
